Rosario day to day with contusion in left hand

PHOENIX -- The word came back to the Rockies on Monday night and the results of an MRI revealed that catcher Wilin Rosario has a contusion of the left hand.

"It's a contusion, not a fracture," head trainer Keith Dugger said after the Rockies defeated the D-backs, 8-5, at Chase Field. "He's day to day."

Rockies manager Walt Weiss sounded upbeat about it before the game. Rosario hurt the hand swinging the bat on Saturday night and there was some fear that the injury might be to the hamate bone. If that particular hook of a bone in the wrist was broken, Rosario would have needed to undergo surgery. But that's not the case.

Weiss said that Rosario was available to catch on Monday but probably couldn't hit. He's batting .244 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 22 games.

"That's good news," Rosario said. "I haven't even tried to pick up the bat yet, but I will [Tuesday]. They'll probably give me another day. That's a big relief."

Jordan Pacheco started behind the plate on Monday. And if Weiss needed an emergency catcher?

"Charlie Culberson said he's ready to go back there," Weiss said about the infielder. "If I need him, I'm not going to ask any questions. That's good enough for me."

Weiss, though, used Culberson to pinch-hit in the sixth inning and never put Rosario behind the plate.
