Gordon honors Nebraska with homer, fight song

KANSAS CITY -- A singing career is definitely not in Alex Gordon's future. Or so he said after leading University of Nebraska fans in their fight song Saturday night.

It was Husker Night at Kauffman Stadium and naturally Gordon, a proud Nebraska alum, celebrated the occasion with a fifth-inning home run that got the Royals started toward a 5-0 victory over the Giants.

Gordon gamely tried to lead the singing afterward.

"I heard it was pretty bad; the guys were giving me a hard time," Gordon said. "It was kind of awkward but I tried my best and they responded well. Even though it wasn't very good for me, they picked me up."

The Nebraska fans accounted for large sections of red shirts and caps in the throng of 35,114.

So how special was it for Gordon to give them a homer?

"I go deep all the time, what are you talking about?" Gordon said, laughing. "I mean, it was a good crowd. I think it just energized all the players. I think we all had that kind of excitement and energy. There was lot of red tonight so that was good to see. It was fun to play in front of."

And, yes, Gordon provided tickets for a segment of the Nebraska turnout.

"Quite a few, but it was well worth it," he said. "People that I've known for a while that deserved to be here. I'm not going to give you a number but it was quite a few."

Gordon got his 11th homer and second in three games off veteran right-hander Tim Hudson.

"I'd never seen him before but maybe it took awhile to kind of get used to him," Gordon said. "He's got a lot of movement on his pitches and we just needed one little thing to spark us, and I think the home run did it."
