Royals rained out, to make up game on Monday

KANSAS CITY -- Rain, sleet and snow have all kept the Royals from their appointed rounds this season. Plus a police manhunt in Boston.

The latest interruption came on Friday when Kansas City's night game against the Chicago White Sox was postponed about four hours before the scheduled first pitch.

The game will be made up at 1:10 p.m. on Monday, previously an open date for both clubs, and it will be televised by FOX Sports Kansas City.

This was the fifth postponement for the Royals this season, two of which have already been made up. The White Sox have had three postponements, with all three games still pending.

The Royals have had back-to-back games weathered out. On Thursday, Kansas City got through 3 1/2 innings against Tampa Bay before its 1-0 lead was wiped out by rain, followed by snow.

The stadium area got about two inches of snow as Kansas City marked its first measurable snowfall in May since 1907.

The Royals, in a virtual first-place tie with the Tigers in the American League Central, have played 25 games, but also have had 10 days among 33 with no games. Two of the postponed games were made up as part of day-night doubleheaders.

It's difficult for Royals manager Ned Yost to come up with a positive for all that idle time. Well, he found one.

"The positive is we're not playing in 30-degree temperature where it has a chance to snow again," Yost said.

The White Sox, last in the AL Central but four games back, have played 27 games. They've also lost games to the weather against two other division rivals, Minnesota and Cleveland.

The effect of the latest postponement for the Royals was to push the pitching rotation back one day, meaning that Jeremy Guthrie will start on Saturday night, Wade Davis on Sunday and James Shields on Monday against the White Sox.

Ervin Santana, who worked four innings against the Rays before Thursday's game was stopped, will return to pitch Tuesday night's opener in Baltimore, followed by Luis Mendoza on Wednesday night.

The White Sox will carry over with Dylan Axelrod pitching on Saturday night, Jose Quintana on Sunday and Monday's starter to be determined. But it'll likely be Jake Peavy if he recovers from the back spasms that caused him to be scratched from his Thursday start.

The Royals could not have scheduled a split day-night doubleheader to make up the game, because they are limited to three in a season. They've already played two -- in Boston and at home against Cleveland -- and have another pending in Detroit.

The Boston doubleheader was caused by the game postponed because of the successful terrorist manhunt on April 19 that shut down the city. That was the first of three straight Friday night games to be called off for the Royals.

The Royals announced tickets for Friday night's game will be honored on Monday. For fans who hold tickets for the postponed games on either Thursday or Friday night and are unable to attend the rescheduled games can redeem those tickets for any of the remaining 2013 regular-season games, excluding May 11 (vs. the Yankees), May 27 or May 28 (vs. the Cardinals). Replacement seating will be based on availability. All exchanges must be made at Kauffman Stadium.

The home game against the Rays has not yet been rescheduled.

Unredeemed parking vouchers or parking receipts also will be good for the available games.

Royals Charities and Fox Sports KC have rescheduled the annual Broadcast Auction, scheduled for Friday night, to the Friday, June 7, game against Houston.
