Travis plates 2 as Scorpions silence Peoria

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- It was just another night at the ballpark for a pair of Red Sox prospects that continue to dominate their way through the Arizona Fall League.

Sam Travis came through with another strong day at the plate and Justin Haley was dominant on the mound as the duo led the Scottsdale Scorpions to a 5-0 win over the Peoria Javelinas on Wednesday night at Scottsdale Stadium.

Via Salt River's loss earlier in the day, Scottsdale had won the East Division and clinched a berth in Saturday's championship game prior to the first pitch.

"This is a big win because we clinched before the game," Travis said. "We could have easily come out and not taken care of business and not won, but that's the character of this team, we're always trying to win regardless of the situation. For us to take care of business like we did today, that says a lot."

Travis, the No. 9 prospect in the Red Sox organization, went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while Haley threw 42 of his 50 pitches for strikes and struck out six in four one-hit innings.

"He's lights-out," Travis said. "When he's got command, throwing strikes and getting ahead of guys it's fun to see. He's an unbelievable guy."

Coming off a season in which he went 5-16 with a 5.15 ERA in 27 starts with Double-A Portland, Haley didn't enter the AFL on a lot of top prospect lists. However, the right-hander is certainly making the most of his stint in Arizona.

Wednesday's start was just the latest in a string of dominating outings from Haley, who has given up just one earned run in 14 innings -- a span of four starts.

"Just the fact of playing with him this year and seeing how he's progressed and developed and worked on his game, it's great to see," Travis said. "I love it."

While Haley may have snuck up on some people this fall, Travis came into the AFL with plenty of expectations.

The 22-year-old was selected in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft and is coming off a season in which he hit .307 in 131 games between Class A Advanced Salem and Double-A Portland.

And when Travis came to Arizona, he brought that hot bat with him.

Wednesday's game not only bumped his batting average to .341, but it also extended his hitting streak to four games and marked his third consecutive multi-hit game.

"It helps when you come up and there are guys in scoring position, guys on base," Travis said. "Hitting is contagious and I'm just trying to keep the line moving, being selective and having team at-bats."
