Jones, Nelson to represent Padres at Draft

Club has 13th selection this year; top 74 picks to be streamed on MLB.com

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres will send former Cy Young winner Randy Jones along with longtime scout Jimmy Nelson as their representatives at the Major League First-Year Player Draft next month.

Jones, one of the most popular Padres in club history, was the organization's first pitcher to win a Cy Young Award. He accomplished that in 1976, going 22-14 with a 2.74 ERA while throwing 25 complete games. He also started the All-Star Game for the National League that summer, opposing Detroit's Mark Fidrych.

He remains the club leader in innings pitched (1,766), starts (253), complete games (71) and shutouts (18).

Nelson has scouted in Louisiana for the past 15 years and is considered that state's top scout. He worked for the Angels and Mets before the Padres and, among those he is credited with signing is outfielder Jerome Moore, who played eight games with the Angels in 2011, and pitcher Seth Lugo, currently one of the Mets' top prospects.

The 2014 Draft will take place on June 5-7, beginning with the Draft preview show on MLB.com and MLB Network on Thursday, June 5, at 6 p.m. ET. Live Draft coverage from MLB Network's Studio 42 begins at 7 p.m., with the top 74 picks being streamed on MLB.com and broadcast on MLB Network. MLB.com's exclusive coverage of the second and third days will begin with a live Draft show at 12:30 p.m. ET on June 6.
