Scioscia ejected after arguing disputed call

TORONTO -- Angels manager Mike Scioscia was tossed Sunday afternoon after arguing a controversial play in the bottom of the sixth inning at Rogers Centre.

With the Angels leading, 3-0, and C.J. Wilson on the mound with the bases loaded and none out, Jose Bautista hit a grounder that was booted by second baseman Howie Kendrick. Kendrick then retrieved the ball in shallow right field and tossed it to shortstop Erick Aybar, who then fired home to try to get Brett Lawrie out.

Lawrie came in high, trying to knock the ball out of catcher John Hester's glove, and was called safe by home-plate umpire James Hoye, making it a 3-2 game. Scioscia quickly got in Hoye's face, leading to his third ejection of the year, and later had to be restrained by first-base umpire Tom Hallion.

Television cameras then showed pitching coach Mike Butcher hollering at Lawrie for the way he came into home. But the Angels were more upset with the call, with replays appearing to show Hester's glove tagging the shoulders of Lawrie before he touched home plate.

"The timing was on our side on the play," Scioscia said. "In 35 years, I've never seen a catcher get bulled over at the plate, hold the ball and the runner be called safe."
