Rolen inducted into St. Louis Sports HOF

Scott Rolen, who was added to the Reading Baseball Hall of Fame in May, was inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 17 ... Juan Samuel was inducted into the San Pedro de Macoris Hall of Fame earlier this month. His brother, Roberto, accepted on his behalf ... Greg Legg, a native of Peckville, Pa., is being inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Northeast Chapter, on Oct. 4 ... Garry Maddox is among inductees into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in November. Also being inducted posthumously is Sam Thompson, a Hall of Fame outfielder with the Phillies (1889-1898) ... In August, Benito Santiago (San Diego Padres) and Jamie Moyer (Seattle Mariners) were inductees in those clubs' Halls of Fame ... Mike Lieberthal was a summer inductee into the California Jewish HOF ... Matt Stairs was a June inductee into the Canadian Baseball HOF ... Chase Utley will become the third Phillies player in the Arizona Fall League HOF in October. He joins Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard ... Chairman David Montgomery is the 2015 recipient of the Jamie Moyer Foundation Legends Award and Community All-Star Award.

Legg, the Clearwater Threshers manager, was named the Florida State League Manager of the Year ... Similar honors went to Dusty Wathan with the Reading Fightin' Phils in the Eastern League ... Mike Compton, senior advisor of Player Development, is retiring. The Tampa, Fla., resident has been in the player development system since 2004. Drafted by the Phillies in 1965, he played nine seasons in their Minor League system and briefly in the Majors (1970). He was the recipient of the John Vukovich Award in 2010 ... Bobby Shantz, the American League MVP in 1952, will turn 90 on Sept. 26. He ended a 16-year career with the Phillies in 1964.

Bill Harper, a Phillies scout from 1970 through 2000, died Sept. 10. He served as a part-time scout following retirement as a full-time member of the organization. Among the players he signed were Ryne Sandberg and Larry Christenson. Harper won the Dallas Green Scout of the Year Award for scouting excellence in 2012.

Mike Hessman's grand slam against Lehigh Valley on Aug. 3, was the 433rd home run of his Minor League career. He broke the all-time Minor League record held by outfielder Buzz Arlett, who spent 18 seasons in the Minors, starting in 1918. As a 32-year-old, Arlett spent only one season in the Major Leagues, 1932, with the Phillies, posting a .313 average with 18 homers and 72 RBIs in 121 games.

Infield opponents in the New York Collegiate Baseball Western Division championship held in July were Connor Combs and Bubba Hollins. Connor is the son of Pat Combs, a left-handed pitcher with the Phillies (1989-92). Bubba's dad, Dave, was a Phillies third baseman (1990-95, 2002).
