Victorino's availability uncertain for Opening Day
BALTIMORE -- Shane Victorino's status for Opening Day could go down to the wire.
The right fielder, who strained his right hamstring in the final game of Spring Training, will get a full medical exam in Boston on Monday morning, which follows the MRI he was to have on Sunday.
The Red Sox open the 2014 season at Baltimore's Camden Yards at 3:05 p.m. ET on Monday. The flight from Boston to Baltimore is roughly an hour and 15 minutes.
"No word on Shane. He's en route back to Boston right now," Farrell said Sunday at Camden Yards. "He'll go through an MRI this afternoon and then a full work-up and exam tomorrow morning. So there's no roster decision. There's no update to give you at this point."
If Victorino doesn't start Monday, Jonny Gomes or Mike Carp could be inserted into the lineup.
Should the injury require a move to the disabled list for Victorino, the Red Sox could summon Jackie Bradley Jr., who lost the starting center-field job to Grady Sizemore, or Bryce Brentz. Both of those players are slated to open the season at Triple-A Pawtucket.
The Red Sox intentionally took it slow with Victorino this spring so he could try to avoid some of the nagging injuries that limited him to 122 games last season.
The plan seemed to work until Saturday's Grapefruit League contest, when he strained his hamstring while running the bases against the Twins.
