Shifting Wallach to bench, Dodgers finalize staff

LOS ANGELES -- Tim Wallach has been shifted to bench coach and Lorenzo Bundy will replace him as third-base coach on manager Don Mattingly's staff, the Dodgers announced on Monday.

The remainder of the staff returns intact: pitching coach Rick Honeycutt, hitting coach Mark McGwire, first-base coach Davey Lopes, assistant hitting coach John Valentin, assistant pitching coach Ken Howell, bullpen coach Chuck Crim, catching coach Steve Yeager and coach Manny Mota.

Wallach, the club's third-base coach for the last three years, takes over for Trey Hillman, who was dismissed last month.

Bundy replaced Wallach as manager at Triple-A Albuquerque three years ago. He previously coached in the Major Leagues with Arizona.

Finalizing the staff was delayed until Wallach's situation was resolved. He had interviewed for managerial vacancies in Detroit and Seattle that were filled by Brad Ausmus and Lloyd McClendon, respectively.

"Tim was disappointed not getting a managers job, but I know he's excited about a new challenge," said general manager Ned Colletti. "I think he's earned this opportunity. It's good for him and good for us."

Wallach, 56, played 17 seasons in the Major Leagues, was a five-time All-Star and a three-time Gold Glove Award-winning third baseman. He played most of his career in Montreal but also played for the Dodgers and Angels.

Bundy, who is 54 and speaks fluent Spanish, played eight Minor League seasons and has managed in the Minor Leagues and the Mexican League for a dozen years.
