Short hops

• The reports were good on catcher Yasmani Grandal's return to professional baseball Saturday, as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI and caught nine innings for Triple-A Tucson. Grandal was suspended for the Padres' first 50 games of the season after testing positive for elevated levels of testosterone. He's allowed to play in 10 Minor League games before he's eligible to play for the Padres on May 28.

"He had a good game behind the plate, blocked balls fine," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He had some good swings and looked good behind the plate."

• Former Padres pitcher Thad Weber was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays on Sunday. Weber was designated for assignment earlier in the week. He appeared in three games for the Padres this year, posting a 2.00 ERA in nine innings. Weber was 4-1 with a 3.93 ERA in six starts for Triple-A Tucson.
