Sources: Angels sign Cuban infield prospect Baldoquin
Club won't announce signing until it's official, which could happen next week
Cuban infielder Roberto Baldoquin has signed with the Angels after passing his physical, sources told MLB.com on Saturday.
Baldoquin, who turns 21 in May, will receive an $8 million signing bonus once the deal becomes official.
The signing won't be announced by the team until paperwork is approved by the Commissioner's Office, which could take place at some point next week.
He also will be invited to Major League Spring Training and will start the season at either Class A Advanced Inland Empire or Double-A Arkansas, exclusively playing shortstop.
The Angels believe the 5-foot-11, 176-pound Baldoquin will advance through the system quickly.
"We're going to let him tell us when it's time to move," Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said during the Winter Meetings, "but he's a pretty advanced player. He's a confident kid who understands what he is, what he can do."
Dipoto called Baldoquin "a very well-rounded player" who's "a gifted defender with soft hands," "has plenty of arm strength to move around the diamond" and "a very advanced feel in the batter's box."
