MLB reveals special caps for All-Star Game
Design intended to commemorate helmet worn by host Twins in 1970's
Voting continues through 11:59 p.m. ET Thursday on the All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot Sponsored by Experian to decide starters for the 85th Midsummer Classic on July 15 at Target Field, and we'll find out at 7 p.m. on Sunday what the rosters look like.
In the meantime, we at least know what kind of caps they will be wearing in Minnesota.
Major League Baseball and New Era, the official on-field cap of MLB, unveiled a unique cap collection for the All-Star Game. For the first time ever, players named to the American and National League rosters will take the field in a team-designated cap specially made for that event.
This same collection is now available at the MLB.com Shop, so you can order one now and have it in time for All-Star Week. The caps were inspired by the 1970s-era batting helmet of this year's host club, the Twins.
Since 2000, players have worn a special edition of the standard on-field cap, featuring a commemorative side patch with that year's All-Star Game logo. This year's caps again will have a custom All-Star side patch, as well as gold stars that flank the silhouetted batter logo on the back, a design that first appeared during the 2011 All-Star Game in Arizona.
"Returning to Minnesota for the first time in almost 30 years, we wanted to honor the Twins' history with new ideas, and their distinctive batting helmet design from the 1970s made perfect sense," said Tim Brosnan, MLB executive vice president of business.
"We wanted to highlight the game's illustrious past with a retro design concept, but with the modern twist of utilizing performance fabric," said Christopher Koch, CEO of New Era. "We're excited to bring the best cap to the best players, on baseball's biggest stage."
Players also will wear specific Diamond Era 59FIFTY caps for the Gillette Home Run Derby on July 14 at Target Field, and those also are available at the MLB.com Shop -- with free U.S. ground shipping through July -- as part of the official All-Star Game Collection, ranging from collectibles to apparel to home and office items.
In addition to All-Star gear, there is an exclusive online collection of New Era caps for all clubs at MLB.com. And you also can find the Stars & Stripes Collection featuring the same authentic jerseys and caps that players will wear during games this Fourth of July weekend. MLB.com will donate all net proceeds from the Stars & Stripes caps to Welcome Back Veterans.
