Steady rain postpones Cubs-Cardinals game

Will be made up Aug. 30 with split doubleheader at Busch Stadium

ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals postponed Wednesday's game against the Cubs and rescheduled it as part of a split doubleheader at Busch Stadium on Aug. 30.

The postponement announcement came two hours before the scheduled first pitch. At that point, it had been raining in St. Louis for several hours already and the forecast showed persistent rain throughout the evening.

The rainout came at a favorable time for the Cardinals, who had to overuse their bullpen in the first two games of the series and who were prepared to play a player short on Wednesday. That's because Kolten Wong, after being officially recalled from Triple-A Memphis, came down with a stomach illness. He had already been sent home before the game was called.

Michael Wacha, Wednesday's scheduled starter, now will start the series finale Thursday. The rest of the rotation will be pushed back a day, manager Mike Matheny confirmed.

The Cardinals did not announce game times for the Aug. 30 doubleheader, but it will be a day-night twin bill. Fans who hold tickets for Wednesday's game will be able to use them for the first game of that doubleheader.
