Sunday likely a bullpen day for D-backs

PHOENIX -- The D-backs have yet to name a starter for Sunday's series finale against the Padres at Chase Field, but it looks like it will be one of their current relievers, likely Andrew Chafin, Randall Delgado, or Daniel Hudson.

"We probably won't know until Saturday night after the game," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "We'll probably use somebody out of the bullpen to start and use the whole bullpen. It just depends on how much we have to use the guys the next two nights. That's what it's going to come down to. And if we need to get somebody we'll get somebody from the Minor Leagues, or we'll just get a reliever or we'll stand pat."

The D-backs don't want to call up a starter from the Minors because all of their 40-man roster pitchers have turns to pitch Friday and Saturday, and they don't want to interrupt their schedule unless they know for certain they'll need them in Arizona on Sunday.

If the bullpen is taxed Friday and Saturday, that thinking might change. The D-backs would not have needed to find a Sunday starter had they not had back-to-back rainouts that led to a doubleheader on Wednesday in Denver.
