Francona loses challenge in seventh inning

Review of safe call at second base on pickoff attempt stands

CLEVELAND -- Indians manager Terry Francona took a chance with a replay challenge on Monday night and lost.

In the seventh inning of Cleveland's game against the Twins, Tribe catcher Yan Gomes came up firing to second base on a 2-1 strike from starter Zach McAllister to Chris Herrmann. Minnesota pinch-runner Danny Santana -- making his Major League debut -- had wandered too far off the base.

With two outs and the contest in a scoreless tie, Santana narrowly beat the throw and tag by shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera by sliding back into second. Francona chose to challenge the ruling to be safe, but the play stood as called after a brief review.

Francona has had two of seven replay challenges overturned this season.
