Texas takes pitcher Smith in 14th round

The Rangers picked right-handed pitcher Jarred Smith from State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota with the 430th overall selection in the 14th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.

Smith is listed at 6 foot, 190 pounds. He went 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA in 17 appearances. He allowed four runs on 11 hits in 21 innings pitched. He had 23 strikeouts, averaging 9.86 a game, with seven walks and a save.

Smith mainly played shortstop, hitting .315 (69-for-219) in 56 games with three home runs, 37 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.
