Astros place Altuve on bereavement list
Second baseman will miss at least two games after death of grandmother
The Astros on Tuesday placed second baseman Jose Altuve on the bereavement list following the death of his grandmother and recalled infielder Jake Elmore from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take his place.
Players must stay on the bereavement list for a minimum of three days, but can remain there for up to seven.
The news comes one day after Altuve, who is hitting .333 with two home runs and 18 RBIs, left Monday night's game with a partially dislocated right jaw following a scary collision with right fielder Jimmy Paredes. The All-Star second baseman, however, said after the game that he fully intended on playing Tuesday in Detroit.
Instead, Altuve will miss at least the next two games while tending to the death of his grandmother and be eligible to return following Thursday's off day.
As for Elmore, the 25-year old was hitting .300 (42-for-140) with 10 doubles, 15 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 36 games for Oklahoma City. In 30 games with the D-backs last season, Elmore hit .191 with four doubles and seven RBIs before being claimed off waivers last November by the Astros.
