Longoria third Rays player with 1,000 hits

BOSTON -- Rays third baseman Evan Longoria recorded career hit No. 1,000, hitting a single to lead off the fourth inning against Red Sox starter Rick Porcello in Tuesday night's 2-0 loss at Fenway Park.

"It's one of those things, when you come into the game, you just imagine having a long career," Longoria said. "Being able to contribute to a team and [you] don't really think about the personal stuff. But it's pretty cool. I haven't even looked at the list of people and names and stuff. It's not necessarily a short list, but it's a pretty cool accomplishment."

Longoria laced a single back through the middle to become the third player in team history to reach the milestone in a Rays uniform, joining Carl Crawford and Ben Zobrist.

The hit came in Longoria's 986th game. Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson notched his 1,000th hit in his 989th game.

Longoria joined the Rays in 2008 and was the American League Rookie of the Year as the club advanced to the World Series. He is a three-time member of the AL All-Star team.
