Third-round pick Lemond signs with Padres
Right-hander appeared in 15 games for Rice University this spring, posting a 1.34 ERA
The Padres have signed third-round pick Zech Lemond, a right-handed pitcher from Rice University. Jim Callis of MLB.com reported Lemond agreed to a $600,000 bonus, which is $31,900 below the slotted pick value for the No. 86 overall selection.
Lemond appeared in 15 games (five starts) for the Owls this spring, posting a 1.34 ERA. He struck out 52 over 53 2/3 innings, and allowed only 40 hits. In 2013, Lemond set a school record with 14 saves.
The Padres have now signed two of their top three picks from the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. High school outfielder Michael Gettys, the club's second-round pick, signed on Wednesday for $1.3 million.
