Prospect Ziomek sets career high with 13 K's

Left-hander Kevin Ziomek, the Tigers' No. 6 prospect, threw six scoreless innings and struck out a career-high 13 batters on Monday, as Class A West Michigan defeated Kane County, 2-1.

Ziomek's 13 strikeouts eclipsed his previous career high of 11, set in his last start. On Monday, he held Kane Country to four hits and walked three batters. He finished strong, striking out the side in the sixth.

Ziomek's catcher in each of his last two starts has been Grayson Greiner, the Tigers' third-round pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. Greiner, the Tigers' No. 18 prospect, went 0-for-4 Monday but is hitting .318 with three homers in 25 games for West Michigan.

In 18 starts for the Whitecaps this season, Ziomek is 8-6 with a 2.17 ERA. He has struck out 112 batters and walked 44 in 95 1/3 innings. He leads the Midwest League in ERA and ranks second in strikeouts, four behind his teammate Buck Farmer, the Tigers' No. 9 prospect.
