Hudson to join rotation, Lincecum likely to 'pen

SAN FRANCISCO -- Tim Hudson will join the Giants' second-half starting rotation while Tim Lincecum likely will be sent to the bullpen, based on manager Bruce Bochy's remarks Sunday.

Bochy maintained his silence on related issues, such as who will compose the rotation and whether it'll be a five- or six-man contingent, though the latter is highly unlikely. Bochy indicated that whether Madison Bumgarner appears in Tuesday's All-Star Game at Cincinnati -- which could require the left-hander to receive additional rest following the All-Star break -- could determine the rotation's sequence of pitchers.

Bochy did divulge that Hudson will begin the season's second half as part of the rotation and Lincecum won't.

"I think Huddy's ready. I don't think Timmy's quite ready," Bochy said of the right-handers.

Hudson, who turns 40 on Tuesday, last pitched on June 26 and has been on the disabled list since then with a strained right shoulder.

Lincecum went on the disabled list after sustaining a bruise on his right forearm on June 27. Since compiling a 4-2 record with a 2.08 ERA in his first eight starts, Lincecum has gone 2-2, 7.53 in seven starts.

Should Lincecum indeed be sent to the bullpen, it would be his third such assignment in four years, including the 2012 postseason. He was switched from a starting to a relief role late last August.

Both Hudson and Lincecum threw the equivalent of three innings in the bullpen on Friday, helping Bochy form his judgment.
