Rollins new No. 1 on Phils' all-time hit list

Records are made to be broken. One that has been toppled more than once is the all-time record for hits in Phillies history. It is a pretty prestigious record. And we now have the fourth leader in Jimmy Rollins.

Ed Delahanty was the leader when his Phils career ended in 1901 with 2,211 hits. According to Elias Sports Bureau, his last hit came on Oct. 2, 1901, in the first game of a doubleheader played in Cincinnati. It was a single.

Delahanty's record lasted for 58 years, or until Sept. 19, 1959, to be precise. Richie Ashburn became the new leader with a seventh-inning single off the first-base bag in a 9-3 loss to the Milwaukee Braves at Connie Mack Stadium. At the end of that season, Ashburn's final one with the Phillies, his hit total registered 2,217.

Ashburn's record lasted 30 years. On April 20, 1989, Mike Schmidt got his 2,218th hit, a first-inning double in Pittsburgh off Mike Dunne. The Phils won, 9-4, before a crowd of 6,977. Schmidt finished with 2,234 hits.

Now, 25 years later, Jimmy Rollins is the new leader. His, 2,235th hit was a fifth-inning single off Edwin Jackson of the Cubs at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies won, 7-4, before 31,524 fans.
