Reyes 'all good' after scare at first base in opener
Blue Jays shortstop tweaked his Achilles running out sac bunt, but he feels fine
NEW YORK -- Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes had another scare on Opening Day, but this time he came away feeling fine and isn't expected to miss any time.
Last year, Reyes strained his left hamstring during his first-bat of the season and had to be placed on the 15-day disabled list. This year, he had an awkward point of contact at first base during his second at-bat and felt some discomfort in his left Achilles.
The Blue Jays' training staff ran onto the field, but Reyes eventually waved them off and remained in the game. Reyes said on Wednesday afternoon that the Achilles isn't an issue and he will play this week without any kind of limitations.
"It's all good, there's no problem at all," said Reyes, who went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored on Opening Day. "My Achilles got a little bit sore after I touched the base a little bit funny there, but other than that it's all good."
The incident at first base happened when Reyes laid down a sacrifice bunt. Yankees third baseman Chase Headley charged the ball and made an errant throw to first. In his attempt to catch the ball, Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira dove and his leg draped over the bag.
That caused Reyes to make a late adjustment as he was running through first base. He had to make a quick move to step on the portion of the bag that wasn't being covered by Teixeira's leg. The scary part for Reyes is that the discomfort was near the same ankle that he severely sprained in 2013.
Reyes finished the game feeling fine and appears to have caught a lucky break because the situation could have been much worse than it ended up being.
"Everything happened so quick," Reyes said. "I can't even remember right now, but I'm very happy with the way I feel. I was a little bit scared in the moment, but after a little while, moving around and stuff, I found out everything is OK."
