d'Arnaud productive in return from disabled list

Plawecki still battling dizziness but remains active; Muno sent down

NEW YORK -- Travis d'Arnaud went 1-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in his return from the disabled list during Wednesday's 8-5 Mets loss to the Giants.

"I feel like I had a few quality at-bats," said d'Arnaud, who missed more than seven weeks with a broken finger. "I hit a few balls hard, so I was very happy about that."

The Mets originally planned to keep d'Arnaud on rehab assignment for a few more days, but Kevin Plawecki's continuing dizziness expedited d'Arnaud's return. With Plawecki's status in limbo, d'Arnaud was summoned after two rehab games at Triple-A Las Vegas and inserted into the sixth spot in manager Terry Collins' lineup.

The catcher grounded out sharply in his first at-bat and reached on a force and scored in his second. He struck out in the sixth inning before salvaging his day with a double to left in the ninth. He scored again on Juan Lagares' RBI triple.

"I thought he swung the bat well," Collins said. "I thought he caught well. He caught some tough pitches tonight. I was very impressed with the fact that he hadn't been up here in a long time."

d'Arnaud broke his right pinkie finger April 19, when he was hit by an A.J. Ramos fastball. He was hitting .317 at the time through 11 games and appeared to be on track to take a leap after a 2014 season in which he placed seventh in National League Rookie of the Year voting. Plawecki, who is hitting .211 in 109 at-bats since replacing d'Arnaud, was examined by a doctor before Wednesday's game for an illness that has been labeled an inner-ear infection. With the complete results of those tests not yet conclusive, the Mets kept Plawecki on the Major League roster and instead optioned infielder Danny Muno to Triple-A.

The club expects to get an updated diagnosis.

Since d'Arnaud's injury, Mets catchers had hit .182 and driven in just 18 runs in 170 at-bats.

"It's a big boost for us," Collins said before the game. "Obviously, if we can get him to where he's comfortable swinging the bat, then he can help us."

d'Arnaud played in only two rehab games at Triple-A after five at Class A Advanced St. Lucie. He had planned on staying in Las Vegas until later in the week, much like second baseman Dilson Herrera, whom Collins said would be activated "in a few days."

"But we're very aware that he hasn't played a lot," Collins said. "We'll probably get him in there for a couple of days then give him a blow [day off] here or there."

Plawecki was scratched Tuesday and has missed four of five games overall. He has a history of vertigo issues but says his current illness is unrelated.

• Reliever Bobby Parnell was scheduled to join the Mets during Wednesday's game but will remain inactive until later this week. Parnell appeared in 15 rehab games between St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton, pitching to an 11.57 ERA in 14 innings. Parnell is recovering from Tommy John surgery. He saved 22 games for the Mets in 2013. Collins reiterated Wednesday that the current closer job belongs to Jeurys Familia.
