Snider, Young highlight Orioles' offseason moves

BALTIMORE -- MLB.com continues its look at some of the early camp storylines with the next part of the Spring Training preview package: the new guys.

Baltimore lost -- among others -- free agents Nick Markakis, Nelson Cruz and Andrew Miller, and the Orioles had a fairly quiet offseason as executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette's potential candidacy in Toronto was the biggest rumor. But Duquette, who preached again at FanFest that he's focused on improving the O's, still made additions. Here are some of the notable ones:

OF Travis Snider: Acquired in a late-January trade from the Pirates, Snider gives the Orioles a left-handed-hitting outfielder with a strong glove and power potential. The 27-year-old is coming off a strong second half of the season with Pittsburgh.

LHP Wesley Wright: The veteran southpaw was non-tendered by the Cubs before the Orioles signed him to a one-year contract in mid-December. The 30-year-old is with his fifth organization and will compete for a bullpen spot this spring.

RHP Jason Garcia: One of two Rule 5 Draft picks this winter, Garcia is a power arm who put on a clinic against the Orioles during the fall instructional league. With a fastball that has hit triple digits, Garcia is intriguing. But he'll have to make the team out of camp to avoid being offered back to the Red Sox.

RHP Logan Verrett: The 24-year-old was selected in the Rule 5 Draft from the Mets, where he was a non-roster invitee of the club in last year's Major League camp. This spring, like Garcia, all eyes will be on Verrett as the Orioles try to determine if he's ready for the big leagues now.

OF Alex Hassan: A former Red Sox, Hassan was claimed twice off waivers in the span of a week, with the Orioles taking him from the A's on Nov. 20. The 26-year-old made his Major League debut with Boston in June, and the right-handed hitter is known for being selective at the plate.

OF/DH Delmon Young: Technically, Young isn't new. But re-signing him was a big move for the Orioles, with Young figuring to get more playing time on a team without Cruz and Markakis. Young had some of the Orioles' biggest hits last year and was impressive despite limited at-bats.
