Trio of walk-off HRs, triple mark MLB first

In a day full of dramatic finishes across the country, a new baseball first occurred.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Monday marked the first time in Major League history that there were three walk-off home runs and a walk-off triple in the same day.

In Atlanta, Andrelton Simmons hit a walk-off triple against the Rockies in a crazy 9-8 win for the Braves. Dan Uggla drew a leadoff walk in the 10th inning against Edgmer Escalona and scored the winning run from first base when Simmons delivered the game-winning hit into the left-center-field gap.

Jason Giambi was the hero in Cleveland, coming off the bench to hit a game-winning home run in the ninth against the White Sox. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the 42-year-old became the oldest player in Major League history to launch a walk-off shot.

"I wasn't trying to do too much," Giambi said. "I just wanted to see it and kind of hit it. I got a pitch up in the strike zone and ended up catching up to it."

The Rangers also had a flair for the dramatic in Arlington against the Angels. Trailing by a score of 3-2 going into the ninth inning, A.J. Pierzynski hit a solo shot to tie the game, before Geovany Soto sealed the victory with a two-out solo home run off Ernesto Frieri.

"Awesome," Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus said. "Walk-off home run, first of the year, oh yeah, for sure we needed that. It was a great game. Those kind of games can wake you up."

To finish out the night, Chris Denorfia smacked a two-run home run off Reds fireballer Aroldis Chapman in the ninth for a tight 2-1 victory in San Diego.
