Nolasco slated to undergo right ankle surgery

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins right-hander Ricky Nolasco will undergo surgery to repair his right ankle on July 13 and there's no timetable for his return, general manager Terry Ryan said on Monday.

Nolasco has been out since June 1 with a right ankle impingement and the Twins were hopeful he'd be able to avoid surgery. He initially received a cortisone shot in the foot and was later fitted with orthotics, but neither option worked once he tried to throw off a mound.

Nolasco saw three different doctors, including foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C., last week. The decision was made to remove the bone fragment in his ankle after conferring with Twins team physician Dr. John Steubs.

Nolasco, signed to a four-year deal worth $49 million before the 2014 season, was 5-1 with a 5.51 ERA in seven starts this year. He also missed nearly a month with right elbow inflammation in early April.
