Veras making big impression on Tigers

KANSAS CITY -- Tigers manager Jim Leyland likes what he has seen of Jose Veras since Detroit acquired the veteran right-hander from the Astros on July 29.

Entering Sunday, Veras had appeared in 17 games for the Tigers and carried a 2.81 earned run average with opponents hitting .193 against him. Veras had 11 strikeouts and six walks over 16 innings.

"He has done a good job," Leyland said. "He's a veteran guy who has a little bit of action to his delivery that is probably deceiving to the hitter. He has done fine. He's very professional, doesn't say much. He just goes about his business."
