V-Mart dealing with sore left quad

ARLINGTON -- The sight of Victor Martinez limping off the field has been a familiar one this season because of his knee issues. This time, however, it was a quadriceps injury that forced him out of Monday's 7-4 win at Texas after he had to hobble his way around the bases.

Martinez was diagnosed with a sore left quad and is scheduled to be re-examined on Tuesday, giving manager Brad Ausmus a better idea how much he'll be able to play in the season's final week. He won't be shut down if he's able to play, Ausmus said, but he'll probably be limited to two or three more games.

"I would be surprised if he plays tomorrow," Ausmus said after the game, "but we'll wait and see."

Martinez hit a pair of singles, including a line drive to right with one out in the fifth inning. After the liner he advanced to third base on Nick Castellanos' double to the left-field wall but was barely above walking speed as he struggled to make it there.

Head athletic trainer Kevin Rand ran from the dugout as Martinez hunched over at third base, but Martinez said he was able to stay in the game. But after Martinez limped home on James McCann's ensuing two-run single, Ausmus decided that was enough.

Rookie Steven Moya pinch-hit when Martinez's spot came back up in the sixth.

Ausmus doesn't know if the quad injury is related to the issues with Martinez's left knee, which began with a torn meniscus just before Spring Training in February and have pretty much lingered.

"The quad [injury] isn't entirely new," Ausmus said. "It has acted up before, [just] not enough to take him out of a game."
