Davis wades through 9th for Game 2 save

After first two hitters reach base, right-hander seals 2-0 ALCS lead

KANSAS CITY -- The situation got a little more exciting than the Royals, their fans and closer Wade Davis would have preferred in the top of the ninth of Kansas City's 6-3 win over Toronto in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series, which continues Monday night at Rogers Centre (7 p.m. ET air time on FOX Sports 1/Sportsnet, with game time slated for 8 p.m.).

After the Royals stormed back from a 3-0 deficit and grabbed a three-run lead, the victory appeared in safe hands with Davis, who was 17 of 18 in save situations in the regular season and 2-for-2 in the postseason.

And Davis knew he would be facing the Nos. 8-9-1 hitters for the Blue Jays, staying away from Toronto's potent middle of the order if he could retire the side in order. But Kevin Pillar led off the ninth by shooting a single to right.

"I was trying to go in, but it wound up being more middle down, probably right where he wants it," Davis said.

Davis then faced pinch-hitter Cliff Pennington, who coaxed a walk on a 3-2 cutter that seemed to nick the inside corner at the knees.

"I didn't even look at it, but I thought it was a pretty good pitch," Davis said.

The tying run strode to the plate in Ben Revere. But Davis calmly struck out Revere on a 3-2 curveball.

"Maybe he was looking fastball," Davis said.

Davis still had to plow through the dangerous duo of Josh Donaldson and Jose Bautista. It was the Royals' best against the Jays' best.

"I probably had more heart rate going on before the guys got on and those two came up," Davis said. "After the first two got on, I was just trying to settle down and make some good pitches. I kind of relaxed more as the inning went on."

Davis knew he couldn't make a mistake to Donaldson or Bautista.

"You have to be aggressive, because the more looks they get, the better for them," Davis said. "Just hit your spots and stay around the zone. You don't want to give them six or seven pitches to look at."

Davis fired a cutter that Donaldson couldn't catch up to for strike three. And then Davis threw the same pitch to Bautista, who flied out to right. Game over.

And now Kansas City will head north of the border with a 2-0 lead in the series.

"We still got a lot of work to do," Davis said. "That team is still very capable."
