Series finale against Twins postponed

Game will likely be made up in September

MINNESOTA -- Inclement weather at Target Field caused the postponement of Wednesday's series finale between the Angels and Twins, who probably won't make this game up until late in the season.

Both teams share a day off on Thursday, but the conditions aren't expected to be favorable then, either. So the Angels were getting ready to fly back home on Wednesday night, albeit a little earlier than originally scheduled, before starting a six-game homestand against the Tigers and Rangers on Friday.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia will simply bump his starters back a day, meaning Wednesday's scheduled starter, Tommy Hanson, will start Friday's series opener against Detroit, followed by Garrett Richards and C.J. Wilson.

Weather reports heading into Wednesday indicated a 100-percent chance of precipitation at around the 5:10 p.m. PT start time. The weather held up throughout the day and both teams showed up to Target Field for their normal pregame, hoping to at least get five innings in. But sleet came down while the Angels were taking batting practice, forcing them off the field so the tarp could come on.

Fifteen minutes before first pitch, with no real let-up in sight and temperatures at 38 degrees, the game was called.

"If you can start a game and then see how the conditions progress, that's one thing," Scioscia said. "But we couldn't even get started in this stuff."

A natural makeup date for this game could come Monday, Sept. 9. Both teams share an off day and the Angels will be en route to Toronto, with Minneapolis basically on the way. The Twins would be in the middle of a homestand.

Perhaps now, at 4-10, the Angels could use a rainout.

"It's neither here nor there," Scioscia disputed. "At some point, you want to play because you know you need to play to get where you want to be. But it is what it is."
