Weiss gets good report on Morales' split-squad start

PHOENIX -- The trouble with split-squad games is that a manager can't be two places at once, so he has to rely on others' reports when it comes to deciphering box scores.

On Wednesday in Surprise, left-hander Franklin Morales allowed one unearned run on three hits while striking out five and walking zero over three innings. The actual outing, Rockies manager Walt Weiss was told, lived up to the line.

"Frankie, he's still got a big arm. I think he still ran it up to, I want to say 95 [mph], he topped out yesterday," Weiss said. "He was cutting the ball in to righties, he's got a little split that he throws for a changeup, so he's got weapons to attack both sides of the plate. He's in a good place."

It was the second strong Cactus League outing for Morales, who threw two innings of one-hit ball in his spring opener. The 28-year-old is still under consideration for the starting rotation, Weiss said.
