White Sox and Cubs to Honor Minnie Minoso and Ernie Banks

Throwback Jerseys and Special Uniform Numbers Pay Respect to the Late Stars

CHICAGO - The Chicago White Sox will honor late legend Minnie Minoso with the team's players wearing throwback jerseys on Sunday, July 12 and when the teams meet again on Friday, August 14 at U.S. Cellular Field. The commemorative jerseys are part of this year's Crosstown Cup series against the Chicago Cubs, whose players also will wear jerseys from the same era honoring the late Ernie Banks.

The White Sox will wear the 1959 road jerseys when they visit the Cubs on July 12, followed by the 1959 home jerseys on August 14 at U.S. Cellular Field. When the Sox play at home against the Cubs on August 14, every player on the White Sox will wear Minoso's No. 9. The Cubs will do the same, wearing Banks' No. 14 at Wrigley Field on Sunday, July 12.

"Minnie was a legend who will be remembered for his contributions on the field as well as off the field," said White Sox Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Brooks Boyer. "We honor Minnie along with fellow Chicago baseball great Ernie Banks during the Crosstown Cup series by sporting uniforms from the era during which they played. These baseball icons left their mark on Chicago baseball, and our annual series is the perfect time to remember what they mean to all baseball fans in Chicago."

The White Sox wore the uniforms, widely recognized as the "1959 jerseys," while Minoso played with the team from 1951-57 and 1960-1961. Minoso became the first black player in White Sox franchise history on May 1, 1951. He also was baseball's first black Latin star and a seven-time All-Star. Also known as "Mr. White Sox," the beloved Minoso endeared himself to millions of Chicagoans over the years, first as a dynamic player with the popular Go-Go Sox of the 1950s and 1960s and later as a White Sox community relations ambassador for decades.

Tickets for the Crosstown Cup games at U.S. Cellular Field are available at whitesox.com, the U.S. Cellular Field ticket office (Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.) or by calling 866-SOX-GAME.
