Beckham exits with quad bruise, likely out Sunday

PHILADELPHIA -- White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham exited Saturday night's 2-1 loss to the Phillies in 13 innings with a left quad bruise and probably won't play in Sunday afternoon's first-half finale at Citizens Bank Park.

Beckham was injured when Casper Wells made a sliding catch down the right-field line of Delmon Young's fly ball in the 12th, then kneed Beckham in the side. Beckham immediately clutched his left leg in pain, but briefly stayed in the game after being worked on by White Sox head athletic trainer Herm Schneider.

"Just one of those Charley horse type things. He got a knee on the side," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura of Beckham's injury. "Everybody is on board for [Sunday]. He's probably out of there."

Josh Phegley, who caught Game 1, took over at second base for Beckham as the last White Sox position player available. Phegley last played the infield in college at Indiana, moving to third base for midweek games to keep his legs fresh and keep his bat in the lineup, and last played second base during summer ball as a sophomore in high school.

"Someone had just mentioned, 'Hey, you're our last bench player,' and said sometime during extra innings to get ready to catch," Phegley said. "I think they were going to make a switch and they went with someone else to hit.

"It's really an unfortunate situation with Beckham going down. He's a tough guy and he'll get through this. It was definitely interesting to play the infield, but it was an unfortunate situation."

Phegley did not have any chances during his short stint at second.
