Middlebrooks exits game after rolling ankle
Padres second baseman will be reevaluated on off-day
SAN DIEGO -- If the Padres were thinking of adding an infielder after Cory Spangenberg sustained a bone contusion to his left knee Saturday, they're certainly doing so after Sunday's 6-4 loss to the D-backs.
Third baseman Will Middlebrooks departed the game in the seventh inning after rolling his left ankle while giving chase to a foul ball near the visiting dugout at Petco Park.
San Diego interim manager Pat Murphy said the team will reevaluate Middlebrooks' ankle Monday, but said "it doesn't appear to be a long-term thing."
Cliff Pennington of the D-backs lifted a foul ball near the dugout that catcher Derek Norris and Middlebrooks gave chase to. Middlebrooks slipped on a weighted bat in the on-deck circle. He left the game with a trainer and Murphy.
"I knew he rolled his ankle. It just looked like he got tripped up a little bit and rolled his ankle," Norris said. "So I wanted to call them [the trainers] over there. I didn't want him to move just in case -- you just never really know.
"We got a good training staff here. I just wanted to get him evaluated as quick as possible and make sure he wasn't doing something that he shouldn't be doing."
Middlebrooks wasn't immediately available for comment.
Middlebrooks was replaced by second baseman Yangervis Solarte. Alexi Amarista then entered the game to play second base.
On Saturday, Spangenberg suffered his knee injury and departed the game in the fourth inning. He's listed as day to day. The team is off Monday before beginning a two-game series at Petco Park against the Mariners.
There's a strong possibility the team adds an infielder for depth in the meantime, though that wouldn't be announced until Tuesday.
The logical candidate is second baseman Jedd Gyorko, who was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on June 10. Gyorko is hitting .283 with four home runs in 15 games for El Paso.
Gyorko wasn't in El Paso's starting lineup Sunday, which might be an indication the team was, or is, considering adding him to the 25-man roster.
