Williams makes use of video replay
NEW YORK -- In the 10th inning of Monday's eventual 9-7 win, manager Matt Williams decided to take advantage of video replay.
With two outs and Washington leading, 9-5, Danny Espinosa hit a ground ball to third baseman David Wright, who threw out Espinosa on a close play to end the inning. As the Mets were coming off the field, Williams went to first-base umpire Clint Fagan and challenged the call.
The crew checked the video, and the call stood.
"It was the last inning, and it was a questionable call," Williams said. "We haven't used [our challenge]. I tried to get out of the dugout as quickly as possible. That's hard, because everyone runs off the field. In that situation, if we could get a guy at first base with two outs, then we want to try and do that. ... It makes you feel a little funny, because you don't want to rub it in. We had to do it for our club in case we get to an opportunity to get a guy at the plate."
