Worth noting

• Right-hander Jake Westbrook, who has been trying to work through right elbow pain, threw Monday with no ill effects. "We did have a good day with Jake," Matheny said. "That's encouraging to hear."

• Carlos Beltran was in the lineup as designated hitter a day after experiencing left shoulder soreness, while Matt Holliday received a routine day off.

The use of the designated hitter in an AL park helped Matheny find some plate appearances for Matt Adams, who entered the day hitting .405 in just 42 at-bats, and started at first base.
