Worth noting

• In addition to recalling Brantly, pitchers Arquimedes Caminero and Brad Hand, and selecting Flynn's contract, the Marlins designated first baseman/left-fielder Jordan Brown for assignment.

Brown was 3-for-15 (.200) in 14 games for Miami this season.

Chris Coghlan made his first career start at third base in Tuesday's game against the Cubs. Redmond said September is a good time to try out new positions for certain players, and Coghlan is one of them, especially since the Marlins have so many outfielders.

"We know what [Coghlan] can do in the outfield," Redmond said. " … I think his value is going to be in his flexibility, in his ability to play the infield and being able to play the outfield. … We need the offense, and right now, at this point, I've said it all year: if you hit, you're going to play, and we'll find a spot for you."

• Right-hander Henderson Alvarez, who came out of Monday's 4-3 win over the Cubs in the seventh inning due to tightness in his right hamstring, said he felt fine on Tuesday.

"He says he's fine," said Redmond. "I think the hamstring just tightened up on him a little bit, but he said he was fine and good to go. He went out and ran, played catch and did all his work [Tuesday]."
