• Backup catcher Erik Kratz hit .130 in his last 46 at-bats entering play Saturday, a slump that roughly coincides with his return from the disabled list (left knee injury).

"I would say his short (rehab) stint in the Minors and not getting the proper at-bats might have gotten him off to a slow start as he's come back," said Sandberg. "In some ways, he really hasn't found a groove in his at-bats. He hasn't swung the bat as well and had the production he's had in the past."

• Rookie second baseman Cesar Hernandez started his fourth straight game in center field Saturday night. It was also his fifth start there in the last five games. There's no particular reason for that, according to Sandberg.

"That's just the way it's happening right now," he said. "As of right now, he's found himself in there just because I've wanted to see what that looks like. And he's shown some good things. He's doing a nice job, taking to it pretty well."

Hernandez went 3-for-5 with a double and scored twice in Saturday night's 6-5 win over the Braves.

• If Freddy Galvis doesn't start a game, Sandberg thinks he's good for a defensive replacement at second base, third base and his natural position of shortstop.

"Those three, for sure," he said. "In the National League, you're talking double-switches and things like that. And he's a switch-hitter, which late into the game also comes into effect with the mixes and matches with the bullpen guys coming in. So he's a plus with that as well."

• Kevin Frandsen was 1-for-12 against the Braves this year before going 3-for-5 Saturday night. In his last 11 2/3 innings, 18 of the 35 outs he's recorded 18 (51.4 percent) have been strikeouts.
