Wright plays third for first time in rehab stint

NEW YORK -- David Wright took another tangible step forward in his rehab from spinal stenosis on Tuesday, playing the field in a game for the first time since April. Wright finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a single, and is 2-for-6 overall in two games for Class A St. Lucie.

Perhaps most importantly, Wright fielded two bunts and a slow roller on defense, turning one of those three balls into an out.

Wright has now received seven plate appearances at St. Lucie, about a quarter of the way toward his stated goal of approximately 30. The Mets will reassess his situation once he nears that mark, in the hopes of having him back as soon as sometime next week.

"If there's no news, it's good news," Mets manager Terry Collins said before Tuesday's game against the Rockies. "If something's wrong with David Wright, I will immediately get a phone call. If there's nothing wrong, he'll play. I've got enough [to do] with the 25 guys I've got in [the clubhouse]. When David Wright is ready, I'll hear about it."

Wright, 32, was 11-for-33 in eight games earlier this season, before first hitting the disabled list on April 15.
