Yankees draft lefty Degano in second round

NEW YORK -- The Yankees used the 57th overall pick in the 2015 Draft on Monday to select left-handed pitcher Jeff Degano from Indiana State University.

Degano, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound left-hander, earned a place on the Missouri Valley Conference second team in 2015 after posting an 8-3 record and 2.36 ERA (26 earned runs in 99 innings) across 15 starts for the Sycamores, bouncing back from Tommy John elbow surgery that sidelined him for the '14 campaign.

The Surrey, British Columbia, native recorded 126 strikeouts while issuing just 28 walks. Degano, who represented Canada in the 2005 Little League World Series, tied for fifth in the NCAA with 117 regular-season strikeouts.

"Degano is a left-hander with a low-to-mid-90s fastball and a good breaking ball," said Damon Oppenheimer, the Yankees' vice president of domestic amateur scouting. "He throws a lot of strikes and has a quality athletic body."

The 22-year-old Degano's scouting report identifies him as notching many of his strikeouts with a hard slurve that he can run away from lefties and can back-foot righties.

Owning a decent changeup with some fade, Degano will need to use it more as a starter in pro ball. He is believed to have the upside of being a three-pitch starter with the fallback of becoming a situational lefty.

Degano spent his first two college seasons at Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College before attending Indiana State, going 8-5 with a 3.80 ERA in 16 starts there.

The 2015 First-Year Player Draft resumes on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. ET, with the Yankees making their next pick in the third round (92nd overall).
