Teixeira headed to DL; Youk faces surgery

The Yankees are placing first baseman Mark Teixeira back on the disabled list with an injured right wrist.

General manager Brian Cashman told reporters Monday that the team was leaning toward making such a move after Teixeira had a cortisone injection to treat inflammation. He would not available to play at least seven days because of the shot.

The first baseman removed himself in the fourth inning of Saturday's game against the Angels in Anaheim when he said he did not feel the proper "snap" in his wrist while batting. An MRI taken in New York revealed no new tear in his tendon sheath.

Teixeira is hitting .151 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 15 games for New York after missing the early portion of the season because of the injury, sustained during the World Baseball Classic.

The Yankees have called up right-hander Adam Warren and outfielder Zoilo Almonte and designated right-hander Chris Bootcheck for assignment.

Additionally, the Yankees received an unfortunate report from Kevin Youkilis' doctor visit in California. Dr. Robert Watkins will perform surgery on Thursday to repair a herniated disc in Youkilis' back; he is expected to miss 10-12 weeks, according to general manager Brian Cashman.

Youkilis will stay in California, his home state, until he is able to get on a field in Tampa. He has played just 28 games this year.
