Girardi successfully challenges hit-by-pitch call

BOSTON -- The Yankees successfully challenged a call in the second inning of Thursday's game against the Red Sox, resulting in a wild pitch that allowed Yangervis Solarte to score their fourth run of the game.

With one out and runners at second and third, Boston left-hander Felix Doubront threw a pitch that was initially ruled to have struck Carlos Beltran's left foot, with home-plate umpire Phil Cuzzi awarding Beltran first base.

Solarte ran home when the ball skipped to the backstop, believing it had been a wild pitch, and manager Joe Girardi challenged the call in order for New York to be credited with the run.

"If they do call it and I do lose the challenge, I think we have the bases loaded with [Alfonso Soriano] up," Girardi said after New York's 14-5 win. "That's not the worst thing in the world, but I don't ever like to take runs off the board."

Replays showed that the ball hit dirt, not Beltran's foot, before skipping past catcher David Ross. After a review of two minutes and 42 seconds, the call was overturned, with Solarte scoring to put the Yankees up 4-0 and returning Beltran to bat.

Beltran grounded out and Alfonso Soriano flew out against Doubront, ending the inning.
