Yankees mourn the passing of Jerry Coleman

The New York Yankees mourn the passing of former infielder Jerry Coleman, who passed away today at age 89.

Coleman played parts of nine seasons with the Yankees from 1949 to 1957, batting .263 (558-for-2,119) with 267 runs, 77 doubles, 18 triples, 16 home runs, 217 runs batted in and 22 stolen bases over 723 career games. He was an American League All-Star in 1950.

The Yankees played in the World Series in eight of his nine seasons with the team (all except 1954), winning the Fall Classic six times (1949-53, '56) over the span.

He also served as a pilot in the U.S. Marines in both World War II and the Korean War.

"My family was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jerry Coleman," said Yankees Managing General Partner Hal Steinbrenner. "First and foremost, he was an American hero whose service to this country is his lasting legacy. He was also a great Yankee, a true ambassador for Baseball, and someone whose imprint on our game will be felt for generations. On behalf of the entire New York Yankees organization, we send our deepest condolences to the Coleman family."
