Sharp early, Moran vying for first-base job

March 1st, 2021

Pirates infielder , a third baseman by trade, is looking to win the job at first base. It was just one game, but he looked comfortable at the position during the team’s 6-4 victory over the Orioles on Sunday.

In the bottom of the second inning, with runners on second and third, Moran made a nice diving play to his left off the bat of Cedric Mullins. Moran then grabbed the ball and flipped it to right-hander Will Crowe for the final out of the inning.

Although Moran has some experience playing first base, he wants the position to become second nature to him just like it is for him at third base. Moran is still trying to learn how to position himself when taking throws from the infield. He is also trying to learn how to field slow rollers.

“I feel comfortable with [Moran at first base],” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “I know from talking to him, there are some things he is working on.”

Knowing that he was going to play first to start the season, Moran was working on his strength and conditioning.

“Maybe put on some more muscle, hopefully. That was the goal,” Moran said.

In 52 games last year for Pittsburgh, Moran hit .247 with 10 home runs and 23 RBIs. His best season was in 2019, when he collected a career-high 80 RBIs.

Worth noting
• Infielder is still not on the field and it could be a few more days before he sees any game action. Shelton said Frazier has been “dinged up,” but has been taking batting practice and took grounders for the first time Monday.

• The Pirates will welcome fans back to LECOM Park in 2021 as the club anticipates 25 percent capacity for the games played in Bradenton this spring. The first scheduled home game is set for Tuesday against the Tigers at 1:05 p.m. ET.
