ANAHEIM -- Astros infielder Nick Allen, who was removed from Sunday’s 5-0 loss against the A’s at Daikin Park with a left hamstring strain, was placed on the 10-day injured list prior to Monday’s series opener against the Angels. Infielder Shay Whitcomb was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land.
Allen, starting at second base Sunday in place of Jose Altuve, strained his hamstring in the third inning on a single to left field. Allen was going to try to leg out a double, but was forced to stop at first base and was subsequently removed from the game. He was set to undergo imaging in Houston, so there’s no word on the severity of the injury.
“I was trying to leg out a double there and kind of felt something grab on me, a little bit on the left hammy -- lower left side,” Allen said Sunday. “You don’t want to miss any time, especially when we’re giving Altuve an off-day there. You don’t want to come out of the game and use an extra guy. I want to be in there every single day when needed. I was definitely frustrated.”
Allen, who made his sixth start of the season at second base, is slashing .250/.290/.328 with a homer in 70 plate appearances this year.
This is Whitcomb’s fourth stint with the Major League club this season. He has appeared in 14 games with the Astros, starting one game at third base and one in left field, and is 2-for-17 with a homer. In 29 games at Sugar Land this year, he is slashing .231/.266/.380 with 12 runs, six doubles, four homers, 21 RBIs and six steals.
