SAN DIEGO -- The longest current hitting streak in the Majors came to an end Thursday night when Pirates first baseman Josh Bell went 0-for-4 in a 4-3 loss to the Padres at Petco Park.

Bell had a hit in 15 straight games, a career high. During the streak, Bell batted .426 (26-for-61) with eight doubles, six home runs, 21 RBIs and a 1.338 OPS. With Bell’s streak over, the Cubs’ Javier Baez now has the longest active hitting streak, 14 games.

Against Padres starter Eric Lauer, Bell flied out to center field leading off the second inning and grounded out to second base for the second out of the fourth inning. Bell got a third look at Lauer with two runners on base and two outs in the fifth inning, only to strike out swinging. Bell struck out again in the seventh against reliever Robbie Erlin.

Bell’s strong season isn’t the result of one hot streak. He’s slashing .325/.394/.675 overall and hit half his 12 home runs before the hit streak began. He had a healthy .934 OPS before the 15-game tear.

 “I love the ride he’s on,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “I love the focus, I love the preparation, I love the energy. Those are things that have put him in the position he’s in. It’s been fun to watch.”
