Pirates’ No. 2 prospect Florentino finding footing -- and power -- at High-A

It may have taken Edward Florentino some time to adjust to High-A ball, but playing to his power has him on a bit of a hot streak.

MLB’s No. 30 prospect homered twice in Greensboro’s 10-7 loss to Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon at First National Bank Field. Florentino's second career multihomer game came just a day short of the anniversary of his first one -- July 6, 2025 for Single-A Bradenton.

The Pirates’ No. 2 prospect got the scoring started with a solo shot to right-center field off right-hander K.C. Hunt (Rays). Florentino struck again in the seventh, going the other way against righty Kaleb Corbett. His fly ball glanced off the glove of left fielder Jose Perez at the wall for a two-run homer.

Florentino has 10 homers at High-A, although he has dealt with a steep learning curve for the 19-year-old through his first 48 games. The 19-year-old has compiled a slash line of .222/.352/.422 with a .774 OPS for Greensboro. After returning to Single-A to start the season, Florentino smacked three homers in nine games and was promoted. And while his bat has taken time to adjust, he swung himself into a rhythm recently.

The left-handed hitter has three home runs in his last three games and seven extra-base hits in his last seven games. He slashed .319/.442/.696 over his last 10 games. Pittsburgh’s top ranked position player prospect joined the organization from the international signing pool with a $395,000 signing bonus before the 2024 season. He logged a .890 OPS in 49 games that year in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. Florentino split 2025 between the FCL Pirates and Single-A Bradenton with 16 homers in 83 games.

Florentino will represent the Pirates in the Futures Game along with Seth Hernandez (PIT No. 1/MLB No. 6) on July 12 at Citizens Bank Park.
