Finding the power: Pirates’ No. 2 prospect Florentino goes deep in third consecutive game at High-A

Edward Florentino has found his power swing and seemingly has turned what had been a difficult start at High-A into a springboard for the rest of the season.

MLB's No. 30 prospect homered for a third consecutive game Saturday during Greensboro’s 10-7 win over Hub City at Fifth Third Park. Florentino has found July to his liking, going deep for the seventh time in nine games to continue his impressive power surge at the plate.

Pittsburgh's No. 2 prospect started his streak with a tank on July 10 and then equaled his career high by mashing his 16th on Friday night as the Grasshoppers returned from the break.

Florentino extended his torment against opposing pitchers, launching a two-run homer off the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning. The 19-year-old has now gone deep 14 times in and driven in 40 runs in 54 games for Greensboro -- with half of those coming in a 10-game span this month.

The lefty-swinging slugger has already surpassed his career highs in homers with plenty of time for more.

Teammate Sammy Stafura (PIT No. 11) is the only player in the Minors with more in that span. The 21-year-old went deep twice for the 'Hoppers and has nine jacks in July.

Florentino spent just nine games at Single-A Bradenton, returning to the Florida State League after a solid 54-game run there in 2025. He got off to a quick start, leaving the yard three times and plating 10 runs in that span to earn him a quick promotion to the South Atlantic League. While he has room to grow into his offensive profile, Florentino is clearly doing plenty of damage with his 60-grade power.

Pittsburgh’s top ranked position player prospect joined the organization from the international signing pool with a $395,000 signing bonus before the 2024 season. He logged a .890 OPS in 49 games that year in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. The Dominican Republic native split 2025 between the Rookie-level Florida Complex League squad and Bradenton, slugging 16 roundtrippers in 83 games.

Florentino represented the Pirates in the All-Star Futures Game on July 12 at Citizens Bank Park. He got the starting nod in right field and came around to score in the third inning after being hit by a pitch and stealing second base.
