Grew up an outfielder before transitioning to pitching at the age of 16...less than two years later, signed by the Astros as a 17-year-old international free agent out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on March 18, 2015...signed by Astros scouts Oz Ocampo, Roman Ocumarez and Leocadio Guevara...Received the nickname “El Reptíl” (the reptile) during his time in the Astros Minor League system, due to his poise, calm demeanor and slow, calculated movements on and off the mound...originally given the name by his High A manager, Morgan Ensberg and his pitching coach at the level, Drew French...Ensberg was a former All-Star player for the Astros, playing for the club from 2000-07...Works predominantly with his low to mid 90s fastball, which has been nicknamed the invisiball...his fastball, which is a four-seamer, has a ride with high spin rates...coupled with his three-quarters armslot, the pitch has strong deception to hitters...he follows that pitch up with a sweeper, changeup and knuckle curve...A part of Javier’s start-day routine includes bringing a cup of coffee out for his pregame warmups...prior to his start on April 27, 2021, Javier spilled the coffee on his white uniform and pants after trying to balance the cup on his glove...Javier remained in the coffee-stained uniform and tossed a career-high seven scoreless innings vs. the Mariners at Daikin Park...Through seven MLB seasons, Javier has been an author of several special moments, none bigger than starting the club’s combined no-hitter in Game 4 of the 2022 World Series...the night was extraspecial for Javier, who had flown his father, Cecilio, and mother, Trinidad Mieses, in from the Dominican Republic for the game...in talking with his parents the night before the game, Cecilio and Trinidad predicted that their son, Cristian, would throw a no-hitter in Game 4....Javier tossed six innings of no-hit ball the next day...his mother had seen him pitch before in the United States, but that night was his father's first time to watch his son pitch in the Majors in person...Was originally added to the Astros 40-man roster on Nov. 20, 2019...after pitching three years in the Majors, the Astros and Javier agreed on a five-year contract that will keep Javier in an Astros uniform through the 2027 season...the deal was officially signed on Feb. 10, 2023.

Returned from Tommy John surgery in early August...went 2-4 with a 4.62 ERA (19 ER/37 IP)...also recorded 34 strikeouts, a .230 opponent batting average and a 1.27 WHIP in eight starts...Made five rehab starts on his way back from surgery...in the five starts, had a 5.14 ERA (8 ER/14 IP) with 15 strikeouts and a .208 opponent average...Tossed six no-hit innings with six strikeouts and three walks on Aug. 29 vs. Los Angeles (AL)...marked his longest scoreless outing of the season...Made his season debut on Aug. 11 vs. Boston, where he allowed two runs on three hits and two walks in five innings...marked his first win since May 16, 2024 vs. Oakland.

Made seven starts before undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery in June, going 3-1 with a 3.89 ERA (15 ER/34.2 IP)…Was off to a strong start to the season, tossing 11.0 scoreless innings through his first two starts (March 29 vs. NYY and April 3 vs. TOR)…Became the first Astros pitcher to open a season with at least 11.0 scoreless innings since LHP Scott Kazmir tossed 14.2 consecutive scoreless innings to open the 2015 season...RHP Ronel Blanco went on to surpass Kazmir’s record in 2024 by logging 15.0 consecutive scoreless innings to open his season...Went 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA (four ER/29.1 IP) in his four starts at Daikin Park...Made his fifth career Opening Day roster, all coming with the Astros (2020-24)…Missed 18 games from April 21-May 11 while on the 15-day IL due to neck discomfort...Was again placed on the IL on May 27, before eventually undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Played in just 14 games, including seven starts, between Buies Creek (2g), Tri-City (4g) and Quad Cities ( 8g)...posted a 2.25 ERA (15ER/60.0IP) with 80 strikeouts...allowed just three homers and recorded a save in his only opportunity.

In just his second professional season, appeared in 13 games with six starts, recording a 2.29 ERA (13ER/51.0IP) with 66 strikeouts and a 1.02 WHIP....was named Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week for the week of Aug. 14, after tossing 9.0 innings of three-hit ball with 11 strikeouts.
